Thank you, Benjamin Franklin

Summer conjures up memories of required summer reading. While many classmates delayed the assignment until August hoping to locate CliffsNotes, I anxiously delved in. An early incentive was a public library certificate for reading 50 books my second-grade summer.

I have now rediscovered the library, downloading audio and Kindle books free with a library card. Benjamin Franklin founded the first lending library in 1790 when he donated a book collection to his eponymous Massachusetts town. Though the residents requested he donate a bell, Franklin determined that “sense” was more important than “sound,” thus establishing the nation’s first public library.
