Where have all the English majors gone?

New York Times’ Maureen Dowd recently opined on the decline of English majors as students flee to technology: “It is a loss that will affect the level of intelligence in all American activities.”

At this time in history, when technology is king and communication often relegated to devices, the liberal arts are more critical than ever. Dowd writes, “Without humanities, humanity and humaneness, we won’t be imbuing society with wisdom, just creating owner’s manuals.”

I am thankful for my liberal arts degree from Sweet Briar College which prepared me to not only tackle life but also to succeed in it.
