The Historic New Orleans Collection reproduced 10 images for the Smithsonian’s new National Museum of African American History and Culture in Washington, D.C. As the only national museum devoted exclusively to the documentation of African American life, history and culture, its opening follows decades of efforts to promote and highlight African Americans’ contributions.
Some of the items from THNOC include “Hauling the Whole Weeks Picking,” an 1842 watercolor by William Henry Brown; “Portrait of Betsy,” a painting of a free woman of color by François Fleischbein, and this photograph of Fats Domino and Dave Bartholomew by Franck-Bertacci Photographers.
