Chances are if you live in New Orleans, you’ve spent time in Lakeview, an area named for its proximity to Lake Pontchartrain. Officially, Lakeview’s boundaries are defined as Lakeshore Drive, Orleans Avenue, City Park Avenue and the Jefferson Parish line.
Originally owned by the Capuchin order of priests, the group sold the land to Don Almonester y Roxas during the city’s Spanish rule. Next, Alexander Milne obtained most of Lakeview and the lakefront. During this time, Irish immigrants built the New Basin Canal.
Today, Lakeview’s still known for the beauty and leisure that originally defined the lakefront and surrounding communities.
