For students assigned summer reading, July is typically “tackle the list” time. A conscientious student, I was undaunted; in fact, summer requirements introduced me to new genres.
I remember challenging myself to see how fast I could read the next Nancy Drew book. A coveted prize was my library’s gold star certificate for having read 50 books my second grade summer. On family road trips, Daddy would encourage me to pause from my book and gaze at the sights.
While “real” books have yielded to audio books and Kindle, I remain a library loyalist, easily accessing my next read online.
