Celebrate Canal: New Orleans’ Champs-Elysées

by Katem

Once a grand boulevard, Canal Street lost its luster as suburban lifestyles became popular. Locals recount stories of white-gloved visits to Godchaux’s, Waterbury nectar sodas, D.H. Holmes’ clock and Maison Blanche’s Mr. Bingle.

Decades later, civic leader Sandra Herman envisions restoring Canal Street’s shine, founding “Celebrate Canal.” This volunteer-led collaboration intends to make Canal Street clean, safe and beautiful again with four pillars: beautification, retail, transportation and safety.

This magical makeover launches with “Windows on Canal,” showcasing New Orleans’ lush botanicals and beloved creatures, including the elusive dog Scrim, now through July 6.

Celebrate Canal with community, culture and creativity.
