In the early 1800s, steam travel transformed the Ohio and Mississippi Rivers into the commercial backbone of the United States. Within a few decades, furniture makers in the still-young city of Cincinnati recognized an opportunity to export their products downriver to New Orleans, then a premier shopping destination in the South.
On February 1, The Historic New Orleans Collection welcomes noted Ohio decorative arts historian Andrew Richmond, who will discuss the transport of goods from the Queen City to the Crescent City. This free presentation complements THNOC’s current exhibition “Goods of Every Description: Shopping in New Orleans, 1825–1925.”
