A new approach to liberal arts

At my recent Sweet Briar College (SBC) reunion, I was impressed at the masterful reinvention of this small liberal arts college for women in Virginia. To remain relevant today, SBC has shifted from a traditional curriculum to Leadership Core, which is designed to foster lifelong learning, innovation, ethics and empathy.

President Meredith Woo explained that within the liberal arts, the foundational courses emphasize collaboration, problem solving, sustainability, data and the arts, teaching students to raise questions, identify interdisciplinary connections and encourage intellectual open-mindedness.

It is this innovation that will make Sweet Briar women successful in a unique, marketable way.
