Metairie Mardi Gras

Metairie Mardi gras

The changes to the Metairie parade route this year bring to mind the history of Jefferson Parish’s Carnival.

The all-female krewe of Helios and the all-male krewe of Zeus were Metairie’s first parades, rolling in 1958 on a route that included Metairie Road. Argus brought the first Fat Tuesday parade to Metairie in 1974 and featured celebrity monarchs for several years, including Barbara Eden, Connie Stevens, Phyllis Diller and Shirley Jones.

Several West Bank krewes developed, though now only Adonis rolls. In all, 12 krewes will roll in Jefferson this year. Little Rascals kicked it off last weekend.
