On Tuesday, March 19, Catholic churches and schools, as well as some local businesses and private homes, will open their doors to display the beautiful, traditional St. Joseph’s Altars.
A long-standing tradition brought to New Orleans from Sicily, the practice has seen a resurgence in recent years. A new generation seeks to connect with the past, making fig cookies, shaping breads and constructing the ornate altars, all to ask a special intention in the prayers of St. Joseph.
