Ship Island becomes one again

by
Ship Island

Ship Island, a Gulf barrier island off of Mississippi, is my favorite boat trip.

1969’s Hurricane Camille cut the island in two, making East and West Ship. In 2011, the Corps began saving Ship from erosion, closing the 2.4-mile gap to enhance coastal protection. This environmental restoration, second only to the Everglades, is a remarkable juxtaposition of how man and nature collaborate.

The huge dredges in the Gulf continuously pumped yards of sand through immense pipes to close “Camille Cut.” This engineering undertaking will yield more protection from storms and more fertile grounds for nesting and wildlife.
