Nothing says Halloween in the South like a withering jack-o’-lantern on the front porch. Carved pumpkins are festive décor, but our hot temperatures and humid air that last well into November can cause the big orange squash to rot early.
Here are a few things you can do to prolong the life of your carved pumpkin:
• Keep the pumpkin in the fridge until right before it’s carved.
• After carving, spray the interior cut surfaces with a solution of 1 tablespoon bleach and a quart of water.
• Use a marker, stickers or last year’s costumes to decorate instead of carving.
