Guests stay in an apartment over The Open Book and “run” the bookstore with a team of volunteers, choosing their own hours. One guest wrote, “Running the bookstore was magical. It was like we were living in our own feel-good movie (or novel).”
With a population of 900, Wigtown has more than a dozen bookshops and has been called “a town saved by books.” It was on the verge of economic ruin in the 1990s before it was named Scotland’s Book Town.
