Emily and Sellers, my South Carolina grandchildren, celebrate Mardi Gras as if they were natives. And each year they take their parade bounty to their Greenville classmates.
This tradition has become so anticipated by their friends that Emily and Sellers are “taking orders” for beads, stuffies and, of course, king cake. Back in SC, they recreate the magic of Mardi Gras in their respective classrooms, from a brief history lesson, a mini parade with coveted throws and a sweet treat of king cake.
“Throw me something, Mister” becomes the chant as the students experience a taste of Mardi Gras merriment.
