During his nearly 40-year career, photographer Michael P. Smith (1937–2008) immersed himself in New Orleans’ musical culture. At public and private events – from the New Orleans Jazz and Heritage Festival and concerts to street parades – Smith documented the scenes with his Nikon, and he sold his images at Jazz Fest.
Before his death, Smith selected The Historic New Orleans Collection to be the repository of his archive. THNOC continues the prolific photographer’s legacy by preserving his original material and by making high-quality reproduction prints available at the same booth Smith used in the festival’s Louisiana Artist Tents.
