2017 seemed like a busy year in the Gulf of Mexico (and beyond) when it came to hurricanes. So how did it stack up against previous years?
There were 16 named storms and 10 hurricanes in 2017, compared to 16 and eight, respectively in 2016. The average hovers around 12 and seven, so it was definitely a busy year for storms.
Even more remarkable is that the U.S. experienced six major hurricanes this year, compared to only three in 2016 and the average of only two major hurricanes. This is the fifth-highest number of named storms ever recorded.
