988 is the three-digit dialing code for the Suicide & Crisis Lifeline. Launched in July 2022, this resource makes it easier for those experiencing a mental health crisis to access help and replaces the previous phone number (1-800-273-TALK). Calls are free, confidential and available 24/7.
Who answers these calls? Sixty nine percent of calls originating from a Louisiana area code route to VIA LINK, a New Orleans-based nonprofit that has been part of the National Suicide Prevention LIFELINE since inception 22 years ago. Extensively trained crisis intervention specialists with clinical supervision compassionately handle over 2,500 calls, texts and chats a month.
