For decades, scientists believed 100 percent of our happiness was determined at birth. Now they believe genetics only account for half. Where’s the rest?
Ten percent, they say, comes from “circumstantial happiness,” or events outside of our control like weather and elections. A whopping 40 percent comes from “intentional happiness,” or happiness we create through our conscious efforts.
If recent events are siphoning your circumstantial happiness, shift focus onto the 40 percent you do control. Regain that lost happiness by trying something new or reconnecting with a friend. Bonus points for rekindling a friendship you lost during the last election!
