Keys to arguing successfully

One of my friends likes nothing more than to ensnare me in wearying debates. Given that we are polar political opposites and his strong opinions – and his 6-foot 5-inch frame – overpower me, I often opt for restraint.

In “The Coddling of the American Mind,” authors warn until we learn to argue better, we will grow dumber, be less happy and become a nation of grudge holders.

CBS’ John Dickerson offers keys to arguing successfully:

• Treat others like human beings.

• Generously interpret others’ views.

• Don’t judge by association.

• Treat others the way you’d like to be treated.

• Practice humility.
