Helping diamondback terrapins

by The 100 Companies

Diamondback terrapins, elusive turtles that live in Gulf Coast salt marshes, are a species of special concern because of their declining population. The Gulf of Mexico Alliance supports conservation projects to help terrapins, including a recent awareness campaign focused on the need for terrapin conservation.

Facilitated by the Galveston Bay Foundation in Texas, this campaign engaged over 4,500 students in the Houston area. The foundation also worked with local crab fishers, who modified their crab traps to protect terrapins from accidentally drowning.

This work was funded by Oxy and CITGO through the Alliance’s Gulf Star Program. Learn more here.
