Department Store Video Brings Us Back to 1960s New Orleans

by

With holiday shopping upon us, memories of grand department stores come flooding back to native New Orleanians.

One of these Canal Street stalwarts was D. H. Holmes, and this 1962 film, produced by WDSU, introduces the store’s fall fashion line, the “International Look,” which “looks like a million, [and] costs considerably less at D. H. Holmes.”

The season’s color was “Raja Red,” and the half-hour film shows models at locations across New Orleans and on LSU’s campus in Baton Rouge. In this clip, ladies walk in Jackson Square and Audubon Park, and arrive for an evening in ball gowns.
