Throughout Louisiana’s history, people in power have used systems of enslavement and incarceration to hold others captive for punishment, control and exploitation.
After more than six years of research and preparation, the Historic New Orleans Collection will debut a limited-time exhibition titled “Captive State: Louisiana and the Making of Mass Incarceration” that examines the roots of the state’s current distinction as the incarceration capital of the world.
The free exhibition is now open at 520 Royal St. in the French Quarter and runs through Jan. 19. Guided tours will begin Aug. 1. Admission is free. To learn more, please visit hnoc.org.
