Did you know Nov. 27 is Pie in the Face Day? Neither did we.
More importantly, did you know the pie-in-the-face gag originated with a New Orleans native? Actor Ben Turpin, a master of slapstick humor during the silent movie era, was the first person to suffer the embarrassment in the 1909 film “Mr. Flip.”
Turpin was born in New Orleans to a family that owned a wholesale candy business in the French Quarter. He left NOLA for Chicago, where he starred in several films with an up-and-coming Charlie Chaplin before moving to Los Angeles.
