Do you know what to do in case of a fire, flood or chemical release? Wally the Turtle has been helping kids in St. Bernard Parish learn just that for seven years.
Wally emerges from his shell to entertain and teach kids in kindergarten through third grade about the importance of being prepared during an emergency. The program, co-sponsored by Chalmette Refining, reached more than 3,000 students during 26 performances this fall.
Students learned why different emergencies call for different responses. Take-home materials encourage children to discuss the concepts with their parents so families can build their own response plan.
