Climate-driven events are stressing our youth

VIA LINK, Appalachian State and the University of North Carolina State University were awarded a collaborative $1 million grant from the National Academy of Sciences’ Gulf Research Program to investigate how climate-induced factors impact mental health outcomes of Louisiana youth.

Over the next three years, the project will assess this by mapping our climate-induced factors – heat, hurricanes, precipitation, drought, saltwater intrusion, etc. – and comparing that to the mental health call data collected by VIA LINK since Hurricane Katrina.

VIA LINK answers over 100,000 calls, texts and chats yearly on various crisis lines, including Teen Crisis Textline, university crisis lines and 988.
