The Krewe of Nyx, named after the Greek goddess of the night, began in 2012. Since its inception, the all-female krewe has amassed over 2,200 members — reaching “super krewe” status this past year.
In the krewe’s first year, a handful of members established a ritual of making a pre-parade visit to the tomb of Marie Laveau, requesting good weather for the night of the parade. While their appeals to the voodoo queen have mostly gone unanswered (with rainy weather in the first few seasons), this tradition jump-starts the revelry of the festival season for Nyx members.
