Nurses in Churches

by
BCM's Congregational Wellness team

Churches are ideal places to educate people, especially those reluctant to visit a doctor, about ways to stay healthier. In 1997, Baptist Community Ministries (BCM) piloted its church nurse program in three local churches.

Unique in our region, this initiative creates church wellness ministries led by volunteer nurses to improve community health through innovative and spiritually guided principles. Today, BCM’s Congregational Wellness team is supporting nurses in 64 churches of various denominations in New Orleans’ five-parish area. Their efforts have cut emergency room visits, reduced the number of medications needed by participants and improved general health outcomes among congregants.
