In a city surrounded by water, many NOLA residents can’t swim, but the Ashley Kelly Swim Program works to change that.
After losing her sister Ashley in a drowning accident in 2003, Latoya Kelly joined forces with the Lake Pontchartrain Basin Foundation to help New Orleans residents learn the importance of water safety. With the help of the American Red Cross, Tulane and Loyola Universities, and Gulf Coast Bank & Trust Co., AKSP offered free swim lessons to more than 300 NOLA residents age 5 and up this year. Participants learned to swim and learned the importance of preserving Lake Pontchartrain.
