It’s Carnival time! Mardi Gras season is synonymous with king cake season. The king cake tradition is thought to have been brought to New Orleans from France in 1870, and like many cultural traditions, has its roots in Christianity.

King cake season begins on the Feast of the Epiphany, Kings’ Day, honoring the biblical story of the three Magi visiting with gifts for the baby Jesus. It is oval shaped to mimic the crown of a king and is decorated in royal colors of purple, which signifies justice, green for faith and gold for power.
