Mood = sad. After being acquired by online retailer Ssense, Polyvore – a popular online shopping platform – shut down with little notice this week. At the center of the controversy are Instagrammers and former Polyvorers who are upset over the impact to a distinct online community called ‘moodboarders.’
More than one million posts have been posted to Instagram with #moodboard. Polyvore became indispensable to the community with a feature that allowed users to easily collect images of pre-cut clothing and home goods and arrange them on custom backgrounds.
Polyvore’s sudden closure calls into question the safety of online communities and platforms.
