Having served in World War II on the USS Columbus, my dad was a proud Marine, and the military honors at his recent funeral were befitting.
We further commemorated his love of the sea at a Mariner’s ceremony. A cannon shot commanded attention, followed by the lowering of the Meric burgee and the American flag to Taps. Finally, his great-grandchildren rang the imposing brass bell eight times, signifying the end of one watch and the beginning of the next, with closing words: T. Sellers Meric. Departed.
Both the Mariner’s and Marine ceremonies were testament to a life well lived.
