Sankofa Wetland Park transforms, protects Ninth Ward landscape

by The 100 Companies

Founded in 2008, Sankofa Community Development Corporation works alongside residents and stakeholders in the Lower Ninth Ward to identify social challenges, address them thoughtfully and efficiently, and build healthier communities.

In 2014, the nonprofit welcomed an initiative to transform 40 acres of polluted wetlands into an ecological sanctuary for Louisiana wildlife and locals alike. What was once a blight of illegal dumping is now an outdoor recreation destination that doubles to protect the Lower Ninth Ward from flooding and hurricanes.

Today, Sankofa Wetland Park & Nature Trail welcomes more than 160 species of birds and multiple community and environmental enrichment programs.
