He was a young kid, only 19, on his first train ride, traveling from Baltimore to Fayetteville.
George Herman Ruth had just signed a professional baseball contract with the minor league Baltimore Orioles. Manager Jack Dunn took him under his wing and shielded the young, quiet kid from the hardened veterans. Ruth was often called Dunnie’s Babe.
On March 7, 1914, Ruth played his first professional baseball game in Fayetteville. In his second at bat, he hit a long homer to right. It was the first of many to come.
Now there was no kidding. They just called him Babe.
