George Porter, Jr. & The Meters: A legacy of funk

by The 100 Companies

A founding member of New Orleans’ seminal funk band, The Meters, George Porter, Jr. is widely recognized as one of the greatest bass players of all time. Porter’s rubbery notes in songs like “Cissy Strut” influenced multiple generations of musicians throughout his storied 50-year career.

Now in his 70s, Porter continues to perform locally – hosting a regular Monday show with his trio at the Maple Leaf Bar. There, he sits on a stool surrounded by fellow Crescent City musicians – always with a smile on his face.

“I feel like I am working towards something that will be remembered,” he says.
