At Sunday’s Mass, the priest veered slightly from the expected Bible-based homily to address the horrors of Uvalde. He opened with a surprise statement, submitting that the tragedy is not a gun issue (although of course a contributor), the killings are a mental health issue.
While government funds a breadth of healthcare concerns, it dismisses mental health the way much of society does. Mental health is stigmatized. Society readily talks about COVID and cancer, but mental heath remains verboten.
Additionally, God and country are increasingly absent from schools and public forums, contributing to an imbalance in families and communities.
